Elvan works with a range of materials
putting together layers of surfaces,
informed by Ancient History, Cave Art
and Social Anthropology.
Mimicking the effects of time on the events
of life, each layer gets partly or sometimes
fully covered by the next one. Textures of
information appear, opening the surface to
the viewer's interpretation. Fragmented
but continuous patches and textures reveal
a resemblance to the excavated pieces of
man made documentation.
Although application of certain amount of
technical control is sometimes inevitable
'lucky accidents' which happen during creative
process are generally encouraged. Her
work is about continuity through organic
growth rather than control. It strives to
place value in meaning rather than shape.
Her interest lies in time and space and, the
place of human angle in it.
Beginnings of the mind and consciousness,
dustiness of the past, distant places and
diverse cultures all provide sources of inspiration
for her work. Visually, emotionally,
and in thought she aims to create non-linear
depths to be entered and explored by
the viewer.
'I guess, the reactions we all have developed
to the contemporary ways of life and
the recent world events in general, along
with the personal effects of having lived
with the feeling of being misplaced for a
long time, always a slight outsider in the
country I lived in, and now, after 25 years
of being away a slight outsider also in my
country of origin, are the driving forces
behind my work' are her comments when
questioned about the non-ordered and
burdened atmosphere generated by her
paintings.
Developing a more ordered structure and
clarity of understanding, her more recent
work seems to be de-cluttering itself, while
beginning to focus at a more immediate
time and environment for its material. The
text which is used as a visual symbol for
telling and recording also seems to be
diminishing.
Details of her event are available at the calendar
section.
